Dear
Sir,
I am a retired general, Govardhan Singh
Jamwal, 93 from the Maharaja Hari
Singh's State Forces. Commissioned by
him in 1947 was the first ,the last and
the only General of the Indian Army from
the State Forces. Before retiring in
1984, I took part in many Wars including
1947 -48 Jammu and Kashmir war and 1965
war in khemkaran Punjab and served as a
Military Secretary to the President of
India.
After retirement I got Department of
Strategic Studies in Jammu University
with the aim of placing the facts about
the Jammu and Kashmir war which I had
seen personally. I was also associated
with the writing of its history and
found that it was distorted. It has not
been recorded properly and facts not
included in the contemporary history.
Even the facts mentioned in the
Government of India Ministry of Defence
books or not projected in the school
books and in the education curriculum
and also in the public domain. It hurts
the Dogras and the Dogra soldiers.
We are very happy that the present
Government has decided to remove the
false narratives. Similarly there is a
requirement of correcting the history of
Jammu and Kashmir and giving due place
to the Dogra rulers, Maharaja Hari Singh
particularly and Brigadier Rajendra
Singh the chief of staff the only one in
the world history who as a commander in
chief of an independent country fought
like a soldier with 100 men and foiled
an attack by 6000 Pakistanis for four
daysand denied the Airport Srinagar till
the Indian Army landed for which he laid
down his life as ordered by his Ruler.
These facts are not written and
distorted history is placed before the
people. It hurts us.
Further the Dogras who had faced
Alexander in the first ever attack on
India under the Dogra ruler Porus the
Dogras under Maharaja Hari Singh fought
the first war between India and Pakistan
after independence. They bore the brunt
of the First Indo Pak war of independent
India, fought in their villages right
from lakhanpur in Kathua to Ladakh with
a small force of 12000 losing 1990
killed in the 14 months war as compared
to the Indian Army who lost only 1100
and even in that 2500 State Muslim
Soldiers defected and killed their own
Hindu comrades and joined Pakistan
Forces, yet the Dogras saved the State
till the Indian Army took over on 26 Oct
1946 after Accession. It was a Miracle
and I am a witness to it. Unfortunately
Nehru Sheikh Distorted everything. It is
time now to put it right as Modi ji has
done for Subhash Chandra Bose and his
Azad Hind Fauj.
This all needs to be included in the
history books. It is therefore requested
that a separate Sub Committee may be
formed because history of the operations
and particularly related to the j&k
state forces of Maharaja Hari Singh and
the Dogras is totally distorted. Once
this committee is formed we shall
provide the material.
My submissions for
your consideration attached.
Yours faithfully,
Maj Gen Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, AVSM(Rtd)
